For the first time in 25 years, Italian eyewear brand Persol has launched a new collab. Together with the French clothing brand A.P.C. Persol launches an exclusive reinterpretation of the iconic 649 sunglasses. Originally designed in 1957 for tram drivers, the 649 sunglasses didn’t become legendary until Marcello Mastroianni wore it in the movie ‘Divorce, Italian Style’ in 1961. With us, that name may not immediately ring a bell, but in Italy he is considered as one of the greatest Italian movie stars.
Persol is quite attached to its recognizable style. That is why it was decided to play with the colousr of the acetate and the sunlenses, rather than designing a completely new frame. The white version in particular was quite daring. “I really enjoy wearing sunglasses when it’s sunny. For me, sunglasses are part of your character and – like shoes – define who you are. You can wear the A.P.C. X Persol sunglasses on a daily basis. With the white version we wanted to pay tribute to Kurt Cobain, without deviating from Persols recognizable style.’ – Jean Touitou, founder of A.P.C.
The founder himself is one of the faces on the campaign images, in addition to Joseph Mount, founder and singer of the British band Metronomy and American singer/songwriter Sky Ferreira. The 649 X A.P.C. sunglasses are available in three colors.
